If you are like most people, the COVID-19 crisis has increased your daily stress. Doubtless you’ve heard about the negative health impacts stress can have. But did you know stress can be a great thing if you know how to use it?
We are going to look at the findings of Alia Crum and Thomas Crum that give three simple steps to harness the power of stress. Special thanks to Don Miller for bringing this to my attention at such a critical time.
Stress and God
A friend once told me that fretting about stress is denying the sovereignty of God. Because all power on heaven and earth belongs to Him, then nothing can happen to me that He has not allowed. So worry is not the answer.
Thinking about the times of growth and victory in my personal and professional life, almost every growth coincided with a time of increased stress. In fact, ShadBoost had its beginnings as a side-hustle during a financially stressful time when we bought our first house. Stress is an opportunity for growth.
Tom and Alia have compiled three steps for responding to stress in a way that minimizes the negative effects and utilizes its power.
Step 1 – See Your Stress
Instead of denying the stress, or dwelling upon it, simply name or label the stress you are facing.
By identifying the stress like, “I’m stressed about where my company will be financially in 3 months,” we have just moved the problem from the amygdala region of the brain (the seat of the emotions) to the prefrontal cortex where we do our critical thinking. This is an important first step. Don’t ignore the stress. If you do, you will either under react or overreact.
Step 2 – Own Your Stress
We tend to react with worry to pressure in areas we care about. That stress identifies what matters to us. Owning our stress helps us to take on the “stress is enhancing” mindset and gives us positive motivation because we know that the important things don’t come easy. You didn’t get into business thinking it was going to be a piece of cake. You knew there would be challenges outside of your control… yet you signed up anyway. Own the stress and turn your attention to step three.
Step 3 – Use Your Stress
God designed your body to react to stress in an interesting way. It starts pumping hormones such as dopamine and adrenaline into your brain and body with blood and oxygen. This produces a state of greater energy, increased mental alertness, and narrowed focus – all of which you can use as a powerful tool to overcome the stressful situation.
Today's Tip to Boost Your Business: Rather than letting a stressful situation take you down, learn to “See”, “Own”, and “Use” it to grow, always remembering that God is in control.
